VIM is one of the most widely available editors, and if you end up on some linux server in the cloud, chances are high that it will already have VIM installed. This tutorial aims to help the complete beginner start on his path of VIM-mastery, and by the end of the 1.5 hours he or she should be able to navigate and edit files with ease. We will look into the following topics: Basic navigation Motion commands Deleting and inserting text Yank/Put Searching We will also leverage the power of VIM to execute external commands, map custom shortcut keys, add custom snippets and make our own macros, and see how VIM can help us with the red/green/refactor loop. The tutorial will contain small, short exercises. Some of the exercises will be using the ruby programming language, the target audience is developers in general. Prerequisites: Your laptop and operating system of choice plus any fairly modern ssh client. VIM itself and the exercises will be available on a server in the cloud.
